Kevin Pietersen marked his first Test innings against South Africa, the land of his birth, with a commanding 104 not out as England regained the initiative here at Lord’s on Thursday. England, at stumps on the first day of the first Test, were 309 for three, having been 117 for three not long after Pietersen came to the crease.
England couldn’t have written a better script since their openers got off to a brilliant start and denied early success for the Proteas. Just when things looked very smooth, England suffered a string of setbacks in the form of three quick wickets. This injected some life into the bowling of the Proteas but that only lasted for a short phase as Bell and KP stitched a wonderful partnership to lead the recovery for England.
Last few hours have been great for the Englishmen and the England skipper would be really happy with his boys’ performances. On the other hand, Smith would be disappointed and would be giving his decision at the toss another thought maybe. No point crying over spilt milk though, the Proteas need to regroup fast and come back with a bang. Do come in tomorrow to keep a track of all that.
Whole of Lord’s stands up to applaud the efforts of their countrymen, Pietersen raises his bat and thanks the crowd. Bell is not far behind, great support from him too, he never tried to do anything smart when he saw his partner taking the torch ahead. Remember, it was Bell first to launch the attack
